Introducing German a cappella vocal ensemble Amarcord

Amarcord is one of the leading international vocal ensembles performing today. Born from the celebrated tradition of the St Thomas’ Boys Choir in Leipzig, their impeccable musicianship and ensemble technique create engaging performances of incredible beauty that have enchanted audiences around the globe.

The ensemble performs works from all periods of Western music, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Amarcord appears regularly at the major international music festivals, and tours throughout Europe, North America, Southeast Asia, Australia and the Middle East.

To celebrate the 20th year of the group’s existence, Amarcord partnered with the Goethe Institute to tour Africa in 2011, with stops in Senegal, Togo and Ghana. Recent North American appearances have included performances at The Cloisters Museum of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the San Diego Early Music Society, Festival Vancouver, Le Domaine Forget, El Paso Pro Musica, the National Gallery of Art, the Malmgren Concert Series of Syracuse University, the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum in Boston and concerts in Arizona, Tennessee and Florida.

Amarcord’s recent album Rastlose Liebe won the ECHO Klassik and the CARA Contemporary A Cappella Recording Award for Best Classical Album of 2010. Last season, the group also released a recording of a special reconstructed version of JS Bach’s St Mark Passion, published by Carus-Verlag Stuttgart.

To celebrate the art of a cappella singing, Amarcord has founded “a cappella”, an annual international festival of unaccompanied vocal music in Leipzig. Now in its tenth anniversary season, “a cappella” presents a wide range of genres and styles. Past and present performers have included The King’s Singers, Chanticleer, Trio Medieval, Take 6 and The House Jacks, among many others.

Amarcord has won numerous international competitions, in Tolosa (Spain), Tampere (Finland), Pohlheim (Germany), and the First Choir Olympiad in Linz (Austria). In 2002, Amarcord won the German Music Competition for Chamber Music in Bonn. Along with the Gewandhaus Orchestra and St Thomas’ Boys Choir, Amarcord is one of Leipzig’s main musical representatives both in Germany and abroad.

Amarcord CDs are released on the Apollon Classics label.

I enjoyed the Musica Viva evening immensely. However, suggest that the artists Google Dennis Potter’s song ‘Dry Bones’ to correct attribution of penultimate offering in the Brisbane concert of 1/8/12. The Brits would not like the current title! Potter revered there, and appreciated here.

Thanks for the comment, Jill. There is indeed a very famous arrangement of the song ‘Dry Bones’ which many people would know from the TV series written by Dennis Potter The Singing Detective. Amarcord performed a version arranged by Livingston Gearhart, however the original is a traditional song from the US, as stated in the program. We’re very glad to hear you enjoyed the concert!
