Coffee, cake and a concert, all before lunch time!
The Amaryllis Quartett performed to a full house this morning at the Independent theatre, North Sydney, as part of Musica Viva’s Coffee Concerts series. Sated on coffee and cake, the audience was eager to hear the newly anointed Grand Prize winners of the 6th Melbourne International Chamber Music Competition. And they weren’t disappointed, with ravishing performances of quartets by Haydn and Ravel. The Coffee Concerts are a popular series – the ticket price includes not only an hour long concert but tea, coffee and cake, and it’s all finished before lunch! Running in Sydney and Melbourne, programs include a mix of local and international musicians. Still to appear this year are The Saguaro Trio, Australian Brass Quintet, Melbourne Symphony Percussion, and Emma-Jane Murphy with Bernadette Harvey. In the words of Carl Vine:
“The mind is most receptive in the mornings, and there is something very special about the combination of morning sunshine, coffee, cake and great chamber music heard in a wonderful acoustic.”
